Seikon no Qwaser is an ongoing manga series authored by Hiroyuki Yoshino and featuring art by Kenetsu Satō. The manga is serialized in the shōnen manga magazine Monthly Champion Red and it has licenced to Tokyopop for North American distribution. A 13 episode anime television series adaptation is currently being broadcasted in Japan.
The story takes place on the grounds of St. Mihailov Academy, a Japanese Eastern Orthodox school, and draws heavily on religious references from the aforementioned religion. Here it follows the trials and hardship of two of its students, Oribe Mafuyu and Tomo Yamanobe, until the encounter with a mysterious, silver-haired, Russian boy named Alexander, or Sasha for short. This puts them and the whole school in an all-out war between the Church itself and the so-called “Adepts”, a sect of individuals wielding powers linked to the elements of chemistry. Though based on the common magical girl concept shown in series such as Sailor Moon, the story diverges in depicting extreme acts of bloodshed, brutality and perversion, and also makes heavy use of fanservice.
One important and controversial theme of the series is that of the sacred substance known as Soma, which allows the Qwasers to draw upon their powers and wield their elements in battle. This is connected to the main goal of the Adepts, the Theotokos of Tsarytsin, an icon depicting the Virgin Mary breastfeeding an infant Jesus which, according to their belief, holds the secrets of the Sacred Mysteries, such as the Messiah’s resurrection. Linked to this is the fact that the Soma is, in actuality, breast milk, and that the Qwasers have to replenish themselves by means of suckling it, a process which apparently derives pleasure and tires heavily those women who nurse them.
The animation so far has been excellent thus far, what I really like best is that by watching the first two episodes you really get to see how each character develops, I know it’s a little premature to make such a claim however, this anime has done well in individualizing each character and allows for people to already choose who their favorite characters will be in the series. Of course there is still room for that decision to change. In terms of plot, there is only one word that can best describe this series. “Funky” would be it. My reasoning would be the same as anyone who already watches it. The b00b sucking for a mana replenish is a “refreshing” unique concept. How it was put to play in this series was great, my reasoning behind why? Well let me just ask you this… “If the mana replenishing bootie vending machine wasn’t used here as a plot device, where else would you see it in play?” Please don’t use H-anime and their cheap plots as an answer as the crowd awaiting an answer already knows that much.
How about my overall take on the series? Well, the main protagonist is pretty bad a$ and what makes this series more promising is the fact that the protagonist wields a scythe. I mean, what more can I say? The series has a scythe as a usable weapon! Besides, the plot isn’t that half a$’ed as those cheap H-anime plots you might be thinking, its enjoyable in its own way, the characters are likable, series is going to be short lived so what do you stand to lose? Besides, Q1 anime this year is all about ecchi, it is the trend now if you haven’t already noticed. Either join it or go back and catch up on some old anime.
PS: What puzzles me is this…Seikon no Qwaser is meant to be viewed by a much older audience because of is nudity content however, this is where the logic goes down hill…Apparently the anime has added pointless scenes to where any nudity comes to play. So the point? Why are they viewing censored crap when it was meant to be shown in its original intended form? Take episode 2 of Ladies vs. Butlers for example.
