Kämpfer vol1 Manga Cover

Here’s my semi-serious take on the sensational hit anime series, Kämpfer! Now before I get blasted by you commenter’s, yes I do realize I’m late, Late in the sense I wrote up a review on it, not late that I just finished watching it. I had been contemplating a review for the longest time but today I finally mustered my laziness and did it. Now on with the program…

For starters, I actually liked what the series had to offer me, it does however boil down to what you take from it. Some history behind the series…Kämpfer is a Japanese light novel series by Toshihiko Tsukiji, with illustrations by Senmu. As of December 25, 2009, fourteen volumes have been published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J imprint. A manga adaptation by Yu Tachibana started serialization in the seinen manga magazine Monthly Comic Alive on February 27, 2008. The anime adaptation began airing in Japan on October 2, 2009 on TBS. The plot revolves around Natsuru Senou, a normal high school boy with blue hair. One day he wakes up to find himself turned into a girl. A stuffed tiger “Harakiri Tora” comes to life and tells him to fight as a female psychic fighter called a “Kämpfer”. Having no idea about what’s going on, Natsuru soon finds himself pitted into many battles gainst other female Kämpfer’s.

This series in its entirety revolves around the idea of different sects fighting against each other towards one common goal. This idea is fine but it all goes wrong once they introduce the next half of the details. This other half is about the protagonist being the one to try and unite the sects and reach the common goal together peacefully. We all have seen a simular plot to this before haven’t we? *Points at Zatchbell* What were the positive points worth mentioning? Besides the great fan service, the animation was rather great. As expected of Studio Deen. Each character was obviously created to cater to a specfic taste, not to mention that each character is likable in their own way. The concept behind the use of the the “Entrails Animals” was great, however the concept behind the real reason why Kampfers are pitted against each other is ludacris although it was mildly entertaining as you might have noticed as a viewer knowing that the plot was poorly developed. All in all, the anime is still watchable, from many of my friends they seem to have dropped it but I personally don’t think it was that bad. My only problem was the lack of plot development, it was loose ended, didn’t focus all too well…you get the picture. For those in pursuit of mild fanservice, excellent anime to start with.

PS: The manga is in fact still ongoing and in my opinion more enjoyable then the animated counter-part as in the manga we get to see the characters developing in a new light. Oh yes, and unlike the unfocused animation, the manga does a way better job at dealing with the plot.
